Bionic Dog

Dr. Holscher and Dr. Lowdermilk are working with a Rose Hulman student on his Senior Project- a prosthetic leg for a special dog named Lt. Dan.

When Lt. Dan was a very young puppy, his mother chewed off the lower part of this left rear leg.  As you can see from the pictures, Lt. Dan is a very happy dog, but has difficulty getting around.  With the prosthesis, the Rose Hulman student hopes to help Lt. Dan live a happy, healthy life.

To create the prosthetic limb, the Rose Hulman student needed a cast molding of the affected leg.  Dr. Holscher and Dr. Lowdermilk prepared the leg by shaving it, and applying moistened casting material.  This casting material is the very same product human doctors use when applying casts to broken limbs.  After the casting material hardened, it was removed from Lt. Dan's leg.

Airport Veterinary Clinic is very excited to be a part of this project, and will add posts about the progress and Lt. Dan in the near future!
